I’m not typically bored by ska music, but The Abruptors have managed to pull it off. It’s not the fact that they skew more towards soul, reggae and rocksteady than anything in the punk category, nor even the vibe of trying to sound like No Doubt at Gwen Stefani’s chillest – it’s the fact that every line on every song on “Love and Other Disasters” just sounds ancient and tired. Like every song is being performed through a filter of exhaustion. It’s the kind of music that you’d find being played at low volume between dance numbers at the local alt-baptist youth pastor’s wedding or something. No hate to The Abruptors one way or the other; what I’ve heard off their new album is pretty good. I just wish I could get into this album without nodding off.
