And its just because it doesn’t make money in the billions, as if the cultural benefit is meaningless

actual success is impossible under capitalism, especially as it’s formulated now. Waypoint, Fanbyte, Giant Bomb – these outlets and the people who ran them were successful at what they intended to do. They absolutely fulfilled their sites’ missions, a hundred times over. But they weren’t successful enough. they made money, but not enough money. they brought in views and clicks, but not enough views and clicks. finding out that waypoint’s subscription campaign was too successful in that too many people signed up at first and then there weren’t exponentially more subscribers the year after, is heartbreaking because it shows there is an audience willing to pay handsomely for the kind of work Waypoint did, and still it wasn’t good enough. 

The idea that we all have to contribute to exponential growth every year way past it being sustainable is what is gutting the media industry right now. it’s a problem with the greedy investors and shithead executives, not with anyone actually doing the work.
